Phill Niblock in OUT.FEST | 1-4 October 2026

At the 22nd edition of OUT.FEST in Barreiro, Portugal, October 1-4, there will be two moments dedicated to Phill Niblock’s work – a live performance of “G2, 44” and “First Out E” performed by André Gonçalves, Manuel Mota, Margarida Garcia and Rafael Toral on October 2nd (Phill Niblock’s birthdate), as well as an installation of “The Movement of People Working” film series, running all four days of the festival.

“With a strong connection to Portugal through his role as a mentor in the Ernesto de Sousa Grant of the Luso-American Development Foundation, he is honoured at this year’s OUT.FEST with the presentation of two works, “G2,44” and “First Out E”: long-duration constructions of dense harmonic fields conceived for electric guitar, from a period in which Niblock was exploring the instrument’s potential, coinciding with the presence of Rafael Toral in residence at Phill’s Experimental Intermedia Foundation (“G2,44” was premiered in 1996 by Toral and Jim O’Rourke in Chicago).

A significant moment, then, as – on what would have been the composer’s 93rd birthday – Rafael Toral, André Gonçalves, Margarida Garcia and Manuel Mota, key figures in the Portuguese scene, former fellows mentored by Niblock and part of a circle of affinities shaped with him, which continues to carry his legacy forward, come together on guitars to let this music without beginning or end resound.”

“A central figure in experimental music for more than five decades, Phill Niblock developed a body of work in which sustained sound, duration and minute transformations invite radically different ways of listening. Alongside his music, he created “The Movement of People Working”, a vast silent film cycle observing manual labour around the world not as documentary, but as movement: a choreography of gestures, rhythms and time.

Presented throughout the four days of OUT.FEST, this installation brings together five films from the series, shot in Portugal, the Arctic, Brazil, Lesotho and Peru/Mexico, alongside a selection of Niblock’s compositions spanning several decades. In keeping with the composer’s own exhibition practice, image and sound are played independently, each from its own source, never synchronised and never paired in the same way twice. Each encounter produces new resonances, unexpected correspondences and fleeting alignments, while the daily reordering of both programmes ensures that no two visits are ever quite the same, inviting audiences to experience Niblock’s work as he so often conceived it: through time, chance and sustained listening.”
